Sports naturalization in the Gulf: a quick fix or a crisis?
April 6, 2025In a football-mad country like Kuwait, the stands are expected to be packed and the cheers ring out at every match. However, the reality tells a different story; stadiums are empty or nearly empty, even during derby matches or decisive matches. This alarming absence of fans raises many questions about the reasons behind them and calls for an honest pause to develop real solutions that will bring life back to Kuwaiti stadiums.
First: Why is the audience absent?
1. Decline in technical level
Kuwaiti fans are intelligent and have a keen eye for football, and they won’t waste their time watching dull matches or soulless teams. The decline in overall performance, the absence of influential stars, and weak competition are all factors that make fans prefer staying home to attending a stadium.
2. Weak infrastructure
Many Kuwaiti stadiums lack amenities: uncomfortable seats, poor services, limited parking, and poor sound and lighting. The stadium experience is not appealing, especially for families or the elderly.
3. Weak promotion and marketing
Federations and clubs are still far from modern “audience management” concepts. There are no real advertising campaigns, no social media engagement, and no engaging pre- or post-match events. How can we expect crowd attendance when we don’t even engage with the fans?
4. Lack of strong competition
Predictable results and the near-total absence of surprises or football drama diminish the excitement of the league. When genuine competition is absent, the match loses its value as an event worth watching from the stands.
Second: How do we bring the audience back to the stands?
1. Improving the quality of the football product
The key is to develop the league’s technical level. Investing in coaches, developing local players, and attracting high-quality foreign players… all enhance the game’s appeal.
2. Improving the stadium experience
The audience experience should be enjoyable, safe, and comfortable. Improve stadiums, provide fan services, and allocate areas for families. Providing apps for easy ticket booking… all necessary steps.
3. Creating an identity for each club
Clubs must instill a sense of belonging among the fans. By creating a visual and spiritual identity, And work to build relationships with schools, universities and the local community, As do the major clubs in the world.
4. Marketing the league in a modern way
Matches should be broadcast using modern technology. And interact with the audience on digital platforms, And producing interesting and up-to-date content. The league is not just matches, Rather, it is a story to be told and lived.
in conclusion…
The return of fans to Kuwaiti stadiums is not an impossible dream. Rather, it is an achievable goal if there is sincere intention and professional vision. The audience is there, But he’s waiting for a real reason to come back. The ball is now in the court of the Union and the clubs: Will they be up to the task?
